Barnstorm Theatre Company’s production of Big Sister Little Brother opens in Garter Lane Arts Centre, finish its very successful national tour. Suitable for 4-7 year olds, one little critic describe d it as ‘magic’.

Written by renowned children’s writer Mike Kenny and directed by Philip Hardy, the play invites us into a magical world of trickery and vanity with an imaginative retelling of the Emperor’s New Clothes from the viewpoint of the deceitful tailors – Rita and Archie. But they don’t always get on and when Archie complains to big sister Rita ‘sometimes you’re not very nice to me’, she points out ‘well, you’re my brother’.

Rita and Archie, played by Aideen Wylde and Paul Curley with high spirited and heart warming aplomb, lead us deftly and comically through the world of a vain Emperor, a beautiful Empress, a foolish chief-minister and of course the most beautiful, most exquisite… most invisible clothes you can imagine.

But it all goes horribly wrong and now Rita and Archie are on the run from the Emperor and, like every brother and sister in Waterford, they end up blaming each other. But while they can’t even agree on which way to run, you will discover why they always end up sticking together.

The production is a visually exciting and highly energetic performance with all the innocence, humour and energy of childhood. A larger-than-life show, fantastical worlds and eccentric characters emerge from old suitcases making it a magical treat.
