National Reptile Zoo – Ireland’s Only Reptile Zoo

National Reptile Zoo is Ireland’s only dedicated reptile zoo in Kilkenny providing an entertaining hands on view of various reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Displaying over 100 animals and 50 species, from geckos to giant spiders, cobras to crocodiles

National Reptile Zoo is an all year round family attraction and is also suitable for individuals or groups. You do not need to book for individuals or families. It is Reptile Village policy to allow interaction with some of their friendlier species and this is strictly supervised using safe, vetted species. The curator has over 20 years of experience in dealing with reptiles.

They also have a mobile that can be at your birthday, confirmation, scout hall or any other suitable venue.

With over 50 exhibits, Animal Encounter Zone, Tropical Walk-through Habitat, indoor and outdoor Picnic Area, Snack Bar, Souvenir Shop and Soft Play Area, at the National Reptile Zoo you can keep the entire family entertained and educated all at once!

Schools and Groups Tours at National Reptile Zoo

Learning becomes interactive when the students take part in the handling session with some"National Reptile Zoo for School Tours" of the education team! Information is tailored to suit the age group of the students and they are encouraged to ask questions as they embark on a guided tour of the zoo, learning about everything from what the animals eat to how they shed their skin and how they catch their prey to their defense mechanisms and much more!

This type of visit is suitable for primary and secondary schools along with Scout groups, Brownies and Girl Guide groups too

After their educational tour and handling, students then have the opportunity to have even more fun in the indoor soft play area and are free to use both the indoor and outdoor picnic areas!

National Reptile ‘Zoo to You’

As part of our “conservation through education” programme, National Reptile Zoo has a mobile demonstration team which can be brought to your school or venue of your choice.

National Reptile Zoo are the only licensed and insured organisation offering this service in "National Reptile Zoo for Kids Birthday Parties"Ireland.

The children learn about and even hold animals which they would normally only get to see on TV and in books. They will get an educational experience which gives participants a better understanding of wildlife, nature, the world around us and our place in it.

The basic National Reptile Zoo  demonstrations last between an hour and an hour and a half, but can be arranged for an entire day. Between about 12 and 15 animals are brought along. Participants will get to see and hold some amazing reptiles and amphibians, such as boa constrictors, leopard tortoise, caiman crocodiles, frilled dragons and South African bull frogs..

  • Up to eight glass displays with animals ranging from tarantulas, to snapping turtles ,to caiman crocodiles.
  • 2 professional wranglers on hand with reptiles which are suitable for handling by the public.
  • Great photo opportunities for the public holding a snake or lizard with your venue in the background
  • They cover the entire country, North and South.
  • Fully Licensed and Insured, everything is conducted by trained professionals.

National Reptile “Zoo To You” Birthday Parties

If you want your party to be unique they can come to you and make it a highlight of a lifetime for you and your guests.

All of these animals are Red Listed by the IUCN which means they need our help to preserve their species in the wild.

In return for your help you will receive an adoption pack which includes an adoption certificate, fact sheet and postcard of your chosen animal, 20% discount on admission and your name will be displayed here in the zoo on the exhibit of your chosen animal.

Directions To The National Reptile Zoo Kilkenny

From Kilkenny City: Take the N10 for Dublin / Carlow. After about 8 km take a turn to you right (R702) for Gowran. Once in Gowran, you come to a T junction, turn left here, heading for Dublin. At the end of the village take the R702 on the right towards Goresbridge. Then take the first immediate right off this road. They are on the left hand side.

From Dublin/Carlow: Take the M9 for Waterford. Take Junction 7 for Gowran. After 7 km you will reach Gowran village. Take the first left in the village, R702 for Goresbridge, then take the immediate right off this road. They are on the left hand side.

From Waterford: Take the M9 for Dublin.  Take Junction 7 for Gowran. After 7 km you will reach Gowran village. Take the first left in the village, R702 for Goresbridge, then take the immediate right off this road. They are on the left hand side.

From Wexford/Enniscorthy: Take the R702 from Enniscorthy heading for Kiltealy / Borris / before you come to the N9, take the left turn. The National Reptile Zoo is located on the left hand side
