Wicklows Historic Gaol
The original Gaol Dungeon is open since its use over 100 years ago.
Dare you come and experience first hand the harshness of life in the Dungeon, where you will see the punishments being meted out and hear the anguished cries of the prisoners or you could just sit in the solitude cell and feel the desperation of those that were there before you.
Wicklow's treadwheel was an adaptation of the Cubitt Treadmill, for it was not attached any milling or water drawing facility. It produced nothing but the sweat of the prisoners consigned to it for punishment. Prisoners tread an average of 48 steps per minute, and the punishment tranche could last for up to 5 hours. Rest periods of variable length were allowed depending on the severity of the punishment meeted out.
