Dun Laoghaire School of Music

Established in 1993, Dun Laoghaire School of Music successfully continues to provide quality music tuition in all keyboard, string, woodwind instruments including Voice, Leaving and Junior Cert Music.

All styles of music are taught to students of all ages. The school’s excellent teaching staff are dedicated to providing expert tuition to all students in a friendly, approachable manner. Students wishing to do exams can choose from RIAM, ABRSM and Trinity College, London. Dun Laoghaire Music School is an exam centre for the RIAM, and students can sit their exams in familiar surroundings.

Students can perform at one of the concerts held throughout the year. Students and teachers come together in concert to raise funds in aid of charities such as Hospice, Barnardos and Focus Ireland.

World stage performers are invited to the Dun Laoghaire Music School to give master classes. The school has had the privilege of having artists such as Veronica Dunne, Hugh Tinney and Virginia Kerr, visit the Music School on a few occasions.

Children’s World of Music

Children’s World of Music are fun classes especially designed for children between 3 – 6 years. Children are involved in the whole world of music. They learn to read and clap rhythms, speak music vocabulary, sing, dance, act and play to music of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and other greats. There are ear and aural training games, percussion instruments and catchy action songs.

There are opportunities for concert performances during the year and intimate music displays for family and friends.

Music is an invaluable gift for all ages and Children’s World of Music classes helps children develop a greater understanding and appreciation for all kinds of music.

3 – 4 years (Class Time Wednesdays @ 3pm & Thursdays @ 3pm) 45 minute class
Different styles of music are explored including programme music, opera, ballet, jazz, pop/rock and traditional music. Instruments of the orchestra are introduced including the four main sections. The story and the music of the main classical composers are covered e.g. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin etc in term two the emphasis is more on instruments where visiting instrumentalists come to class and children are given the opportunity to explore and experiment with different instruments of the orchestra.

5 – 6 years (Class Times Saturdays @ 10:45am & Tuesdays @ 3:30pm) 45 minute classes
During the first term children are exposed to the layout of the musical score. Aural and visual work are an important part of the class i.e. clapping of rhythms, listening to a short piece of music and answering questions on tempo, dynamics, articulation and timing. Children learn a huge range of music vocabulary and expression. A wealth of songs, rounds are all taught including singing accompanied by percussion instruments. In the second term children are placed into small groups where they receive tuition in violin, piano, keyboard, recorder and guitar

Summer Extravaganza Camps

Dancing classes incorporate a variety of styles of dance learnt through fun including Modern Hip-Hop which teaches the latest & coolest hip-hop moves designed to help and improve fitness and increase students rhythm & ability to dance."Summer Extravaganza Summer Music Camp"

Music-Theatre is a mixture of song & drama. Students explore & concentrate on the songs, plot, story, characters and dramatisation of a musical. They will be coached in stage presence, delivery & dramatic awareness.

Rock Band Workshops /Music Ensembles – For ages 7+. Beginners welcome. Students work on arrangements of songs with experienced tutors who have a wealth of band / music ensemble experience.

Acting – The acting programme focuses on script, dialogue, drama & scenes from a musical. Characters and plot will be discussed along with other dramatic elements to the story including mime, movement, characterisation, facial expression & improvisation

There will be a variety concert at the end of each summer camp.
