Causey Farm Fairy and Elf Fair

Causey Farm will host another completely original and magical event to fascinate little folk of all ages. The Fairy and Elf Fair will be even bigger and better than the hugely successful experience last year.

This is one of the few occasions when Causey farm is open to families, so seize the opportunity and go on down for a celebration of creativity, fun and imagination. Story-telling, maypole ribbon dancing, a fairy market and a pixie postbox where you can post a card to your fairy friends are all part of the fun. You are welcome to bring a picnic, be careful though – Grabby the Goblin loves to steal the nicest treats from picnic baskets. You can make a giant bubble at the Elves Bubble Barn …but catch it, quickly, quickly, there may be a fairy inside, or is it a beautiful young butterfly emerging into early Summer?

There are activities suitable for both boys and girls who can dress in their fairy best for the day. All the activities happen around the farmyard and surrounding fields. Attracting all ages, but designed especially for families with 3 - 9 year olds, the Fair creates a unique atmosphere of enchantment and creativity. There are fun workshops such as making magic wands or troll sculptures led by trained leaders. Tasty home-made treats will be available in our Causey Cookhouse, or you are very welcome to bring a picnic. As you eat your treats you can browse through the beautiful artwork created by Liza Kavanagh.

There is a lot to do - we advise leaving plenty of time to do things like visiting the Fairy Queen in her carriage, posting a card at Pixie Post Office, dancing at the Pixie Disco, or playing Tingo Bingo. Story-telling and maypole ribbon dancing are all part of the fun. You can make a giant bubble at the Elves Bubble Barn …but catch it, quickly, quickly, there may be a fairy inside, or is it a beautiful young butterfly emerging into early Summer? Watch out as you wander around though – Grabby the Goblin is always trying to steal the tastiest treats from your picnic!

The farm animals will be delighted to welcome visitors – there are pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, hens, ponies, ducks and Neddy the donkey - and of course they all understand the language of the fairy folk. The farm sheepdogs will show you how they look after their flocks and the new lambs are growing up fast – they love the longer days when their world is getting warmer.

The Causey Farm Events programme of exciting happenings include

  • Enchanted Fairy Workshops
  • Wand-making, Crown-making, Make your own pet Troll
  • Decorating the Traditional May Bush
  • Giant Bubbles in the Elves Bubble Barn
  • Treasure Hunt
  • Fairy Market
  • Pixie Post-box
  • Storytelling - at the Gypsy Camp
  • Fairy Dust Trail that leads to the Fairy Queen
  • Maypole Ribbon Dancing
  • Little Folk Fashion Parade
  • Meet Your Farmyard Friends

You can show off your costume or what you make at the workshops, at the Fairy and Elf Fashion Parade, but watch that Grabby again – he always wants to lead the parade – and that, of course, is the Fairy Princess’s job!

Amost all the workshops and events are indoors – the old stone barns will be transformed into fairyland venues and there are lots of indoor events for showery times… a few dewdrops and raindrops will not spoil the party at all. If it is really wet, we can even hold the fairy parade indoors.

In honour of the time of year, there will be a live re-enactment of the ancient Celtic ritual at Bealtaine, when farm animals were driven between two sacred bonfires, to their Summer pastures. This ceremony was supposed to keep them safe – today it provides us with a great spectacle and a momentary insight into life in Ireland over two thousand years ago.

It all sounds brilliant but the prices are way too expensive. The Christmas Fair is €20 per child! Its unfortunate that adults have to pay so much for admission also, when the experience is really geared towards the children. Unfortunate.
